Boston-Edison Historic District- Detroit
This large parlor lacked a space-appropriate layout that didn't close off the room or block the fireplace. The homeowners wanted a space that: felt formal, created a place to have coffee, could perform as an occasional workspace, and demonstrated a nod to the roaring twenties. I got to work by designing the room around the fireplace as the main focus of the room, and creating three, defined zones in the space. The division of these zones is supported with a large tufted, wool rug, that takes center stage in an art deco, geometric pattern, flanked by coordinating rectangular area rugs to the left, and to the right. Now, the eye is first drawn to the historic fireplace and crimson feature-wall directly in the center of the room, inviting you to ensconce yourself on the bullion fringe sofa, or the flanking art deco inspired swivel chairs. As your eye moves around the room, it is delighted by an elegance that is both Hollywood Regency and Art Deco, moving in harmony together. Initially, the sunlight from the front windows was blocked off in the room by a large couch. Now, two comfortable club chairs mirror themselves across a white marble and brass coffee table, creating the perfect coffee and reading space. Anchoring the far zone of the room, a rare mahogany secretary stands in regality. The folding capacity of the secretary, equipped with a pull- out desktop and the slender elegance of its dimensions, lends itself well to a workspace by day, and non-intrusive bookcase, by night. 1913 Historic Home- located in Boston-Edison, Detroit.
